The ‘Talented’ Lecture Theatre's ‘Moral and Teaching Excellence’ Systematic Activities Innovations in Teaching and Learning in Materials Courses

On 20 November 2024, Professor Hang Tao, Vice Dean of the School of Materials Science and Engineering of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, was invited to give a lecture entitled ‘Teaching Innovation of Materials Courses’ in the second conference room of Graphic Information Centre of Shanghai Institute of Technology (SIT). ‘The lecture was given by the Dean of the School of Materials and Chemistry. The lecture was hosted by Prof Li Guisheng, Dean of School of Materials and Chemistry.

During the presentation, Professor Hang emphasised that education and teaching not only help students acquire professional knowledge and skills, but also help to cultivate their innovative thinking ability and promote their positive contribution to social affairs, social issues and social development. Taking the course ‘Material Physics’ as an example, Prof Hang started from ‘Why innovation?’ ‘What makes an innovation?’ ‘What have I done?’ and ‘Is it effective?’ Professor Hang gave a vivid explanation of the four questions, sharing the methods, techniques and results he has achieved in innovative teaching. Professor Hang introduced in detail how to fully mobilise students‘ enthusiasm for learning through the innovative teaching method of “interaction + self-study + practice”, and shared how students’ ‘inability to understand’ and ‘lack of interest’ in the content of the course can be overcome, ‘no interest‘, “can't use” and other difficult problems of the course content as an entry point to innovate the teaching content; and introduce the content of the course Civics into the classroom teaching in a silent way; stimulate the students’ interest in learning the course by writing a syllabus that is understandable to the students. The report was very informative and rich in case studies.
