Recently, Professor Wei Li from the School of Materials and Chemistry of our university won the first "Impact Award 2021" of Materials Research Letters for his paper "Microstructure and properties of high-entropy alloy thin films and coatings: a review" published in MRL, a high-level journal in the field of metal materials. The first institution of this paper is the School of Materials Science and Engineering (now School of Materials and Chemistry), with Professor Wei Li as the first and corresponding author, Professor Ping Liu as the second author, and Professor Peter K. Liaw from the University of Tennessee in the United States as the co-corresponding author. Only two papers were selected for this award.
High-entropy alloy (HEA) is a new type of metal material produced by melting five or more metal elements with equal molar ratio. Due to the four characteristics: high entropy effect in thermodynamics, lattice distortion effect in structures, hysteresis diffusion effect in dynamics and "cocktail" effects, high-entropy alloys have some excellent properties over traditional alloys. Based on the concept of high-entropy alloy materials, film materials derived from high-entropy alloys also show excellent mechanical, physical and chemical properties, and thus have a wide application prospect in the fields of protective coatings, integrated circuit diffusion barrier layers, biomedical functional coatings, electromagnetic components, etc. In recent years, they have become hot research points in the field of thin films and coatings. In this paper, the preparation technology, microstructures and specific properties of high-entropy alloy films are summarized, and the reasons for obtaining the specific properties of high-entropy alloy films are discussed. In the meantime, design criteria and the future research direction of high-entropy alloy films are put forward, which is significantly instructive for the research and engineering applications of high-entropy alloy film materials. The paper has been viewed more than 11,800 times and quoted 133 times since its publication in February 2018.
Related: MRL is an international academic journal focusing on the research frontier in the field of material science. It is published and distributed by Taylor & Francis, an internationally renowned publisher. MRL aims to report on the latest research progress in the field of material research rapidly. It mainly publishes newsletters, reviews and prospects of original research results and latest development trends in the fields of metallurgical engineering, materials engineering and technology, energy materials, material physics and chemistry, and new functional materials. At present, the latest impact factor (IF) of this journal is 7.323, which belongs to the TOP journal of the first district of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
In 2021, the editorial department of MRL established the international "Impact Award" to reward outstanding contributions in the field of material science and promote the development of materials disciplines. This award is elected once a year. Each one excellent paper is selected to win the "Impact Award" respectively from the original reports and Overview / Perspective papers published within the first two years before the selection year.
