On the afternoon of June 18, 2013 Undergraduate Graduation Ceremony & Dinner was held at small auditorium of the School of Materials Science and Engineering (SMSE). Yang Junhe, assistant president of the university and dean of SMSE, Wang Ping, deputy secretary of the university's discipline inspection commission and secretary of general Party branch of SMSE, Wang Shulin, deputy dean, pacesetters of various professor teams, teachers' representatives and parents' representatives attended the ceremony.
Wang Ping, secretary of general Party branch of SMSE, delivered a speech on the graduation ceremony. Firstly, he expressed his warm congratulations to undergraduates enrolled in 2013 who had successfully completed their study. These undergraduate students have been the first batch of students independently enrolled by SMSE since its establishment. Material science was the first major for new enrollment. The students, the teachers and SMSE that have grown up together over the past four years have developed deep emotions. The four years of study were also a critical period for the establishment and rapid development of SMSE. Secretary Wang, combining with the responsibilities and expectations of young students and the actions and gestures they have shown during this period, has pinned great hopes on and expressed sincere blessings to the students of material science who are about to step into the society.
Vice president Tian Weifeng and dean Yang Jun awarded certificates for excellent city-level graduates and school-level graduates respectively. Subsequently, the teachers and the students jointly watched the graduation commemoration video compiled, directed and filmed by the undergraduate graduates enrolled in 2013. The short video concentrates the missing of these graduates for the graduation season, their plans for the future and their wishes for their peers. All the feelings including delight, sadness, confusion and longings have deeply touched all the teachers, students and families present at the venue. Two teachers studying in the United States and two classmates serving in the army also sent their video congratulations, pushing the graduation ceremony to a climax.
Seeing the young smiling faces and hearing affectionate remarks of the students, four teachers – Yang Junhe, Wang Xia, Pan Deng and Li Ying – as representatives of the teachers from the 1950s to the 1980s, used their own specific languages to give their pre-departure instructions and exhortations to the students born after the 1990s, encouraging them to seriously face the new starting point of entering society, try to apply what they have learned and constantly improve their profession and life. At the same time, they should learn to be grateful to their alma mater, teachers, parents and the society.
The students also fed back to their alma mater and schools in their own way and with their own efforts. The undergraduates enrolled in 2013 launched a fund-raising activity and established the "Fund of SMSE Talents" for providing financial support to their juniors in schooling, employment and alumni returning activities, etc., so as to express their deep feelings and wishes for their alma mater and the school. The dean Yang Junhe received donations from the fund on behalf of the school. In order to strengthen the contacts and exchanges among the graduates enrolled in 2013 after graduation, deputy dean Wang Shulin read out the decision on the appointment of alumni liaison officers and issued letters of engagement to six graduates.
Vice president Tian Weifeng, on behalf of the party and government leaders of the university, expressed his wishes and expectations to the students, encouraging them to cherish the Chinese dream and keep fighting for the dream; to keep an enterprising spirit and persist in learning and progress; stick to unity, friendship and win-win cooperation. All of the students shall have a beautiful dream in their hearts. They shall make unremitting efforts and work hard for it. Finally, the representatives of teachers and students left traces of their dreams on the message board of "Chinese Dream, Youth Dream, Our Dream" and expressed their good wishes and blessings.
After the grand and fervent graduation ceremony, the graduation party officially began. The students have planned their own graduation party activities such three chapters including friendship, love and ideals, with smiles and tears alternately, delight and sadness coexisting, seeking the memory of the past four years in the last gathering before graduation. Talking about the affections of alma mater, teachers and peers, the scene of warmth and joy will be framed in the hearts of teachers and students forever.
