4.1 Exam methods

This program strictly follows the Management Measures of USST for Full-time Undergraduate Course Assessment (USST Academic Affairs [2016] No. 157, Management Measures of USST for Examination Paper Standards and (Trial) (USST Academic Affairs [2004] No. 2), USST Undergraduate Examination Discipline Standards (USST Academic Affairs [2013] No. 3), Code for Invigilators of USST and other documents. Course assessment questions, examination paper review, examination paper submission, course invigilation, exam grading, score summary registration and examination paper filing are performed in a standardized and orderly manner. The exam grading is fair and impartial, and the distribution of course assessment scores is reasonable.

Course exams are conducted based on USST course exam management regulations. Pursuant to the Regulations on the Examination of Full-time Undergraduate Courses of USST, the examination forms include written examinations, oral examinations, laboratory reports, and literature reports, etc.

To facilitate students’ preparation, we generally arrange the exams in the exam week at the end of each semester. The exam time for some electives can be arranged by teachers, but it should be completed in the current semester. The exam forms are expressly stated in the syllabus of each course in the Module Manual, and students can know the exam forms of a course upon selection.

To thoroughly implement the spirit of the National Education Conference and the requirements of the Opinions of the Ministry of Education on Deepening the Reform of Undergraduate Education and Teaching and Comprehensively Improving the Quality of Talent Training, deepen the curriculum teaching reform, achieve the reasonable increase of students’ academic load, strengthen the management of the learning process, and improve the academic assessment system that combines process assessment and result assessment, we have implemented the whole-process assessment system of undergraduate courses . The whole-process assessment refers to the comprehensive evaluation of students’ learning attitudes, learning behaviors, and learning effects in course teaching in the form of phased, dynamic, and whole-process assessments. Its purpose is to change the classroom teaching evaluation method of “standard-answer examination, performance determined by one exam” so that students can actively engage in the whole process of learning, truly learn, think and understand in the classroom, think independently and learn spontaneously. The whole-process course assessment should ensure scientific assessment methods, diverse assessment forms, broad coverage of assessment contents, traceability of the assessment process, and fair assessment results. The results of the assessment can reflect the learning situation of the students comprehensively and truthfully, with academic trace records in the whole process. The whole-process course assessment includes the regular and final assessment. The number of assessments for each course should be between 5 and 8 times, and the results will be assessed on a hundred-point system. Among them, the regular assessment results account for 50%-80% of the total score, and the number of times is no less than 4; the final evaluation results account for 20%-50% of the total score.

Process assessment implementation plan:

(I) Regular assessment

The regular assessment includes attendance, classroom Q&A, homework assessment, reading or research report, essay, periodic test and other assessment forms. Teachers can decide the specific assessment form based on the characteristics and requirements of the course content. The assessment can be conducted in the classroom or organized separately based on the characteristics of the assessment form; the homework, reports, test papers and other materials of the assessment are kept by teachers for reference. It is recommended that the Chaoxing platform should be used to conduct regular assessments and keep the trace records throughout the process.

(II) Final assessment

The final assessment questions should be designed based on the course syllabus to examine students’ mastery and application ability of all the teaching content of the course comprehensively. It is recommended that the final assessment should be conducted in the form of a written exam, with a duration of about 2 hours, in an open- or closed-book or a combination of open- and closed-book form according to the assessment method of the course (test or examination) and the time regulation of test and examination in the Administrative Measures for the Evaluation of Full-time Undergraduate Courses of USST.

In general, a student who fails an exam (except for practice courses) can repeat it at the beginning of the next semester as scheduled and has chances to retake the course and attend the regular exam of the course if the repeated exam is still be failed, which is defined in the student handbook.

If a student fails to take the exam without authorization, cheats in the exam, violates the exam discipline, or is disqualified for the exam, the exam score of the course will be counted as zero, and he/she will not be eligible for repeating the exam.

The student that cannot attend exam on time for reasons, after dealing with formalities of delay exam and being approved, should attend re-exam in the scheduled exam (make-up exam) time of the semester after this course. There is make-up exam if the delay exam fails, and the composition of the delay examination score is same as normal.

(III) Evaluation system based on non-standard answer exam

The regular assessment questions can be determined by class teachers or the course teaching team through collective discussion, and class teachers are encouraged to explore the “non-standard answer exam”. The exam questions should focus on guiding the speculative and innovative thinking of students.

The internship is arranged in semester 7. Students are required to find internship positions independently, and USST will invite relevant enterprises to settle on campus, provide internship positions, and recruit students. Every student is encouraged to complete enterprise internships and jobs closely related to their programs. After the internship is completed, the enterprise will provide the evaluation results to the students, and USST will organize the students to report on the internship. Finally, teachers shall give a comprehensive score based on the overall performance of students.

In semester 8, a 16-week graduation project is arranged. Students are required to independently complete graduation project tasks and write a thesis under the guidance of their tutors. For off-campus bachelor thesis, students are required to keep in touch with the on-campus tutor and report the thesis progress in writing at least once a week to ensure that the thesis progress is synchronized with the bachelor thesis progress on campus. The bachelor’s degree thesis score of students shall be determined based on two forms of defense and thesis evaluation comprehensively.
