On the morning of October 18, 2022, Professor Zhao Dongyuan, the academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the academician of the Word Academy of Sciences, and the doctoral supervisor of the Fudan University was invited to give a lecture of "First Class Begins", whose theme is "chances and challenges of the mysterious chemistry" for teachers and students of the School of Materials and Chemistry (SMC). More than 180 graduate freshmen and graduate student supervisors of the three majors of Chemistry, Materials Science and Engineering, and Materials and Chemistry Engineering watched the special lecture, and the conference was held by Professor Li Guisheng, Vice President (presiding over the work) of SMC and the doctoral supervisor.
Academician Zhao Dongyuan deeply introduced the definition, development course and chances and challenges of chemical disciplines in concise words. In the lecture, Academician Zhao gave examples of chemical phenomena and chemical products that are ubiquitous in life to emphasize the magical feature of chemistry. Then he popularized the source of the word "chemistry" in both Chinese and English. He stated that the research theories of chemistry are comparable with natural philosophy, explained the chemical revolution with representatives of Boyle, Lavoisier, etc., and enriched the connotation of the natural science, chemistry, from multiple perspectives of literature, philosophy and chemical revolution evolution history. The academician explained the essence of chemistry and the chances and challenges contained in chemical science, and encouraged teachers and students to go on the broad stage of chemistry. He also took the functional mesoporous material in the future as an example to introduce the designability of chemistry, which can create great value for human society.
At the end of the lecture, teachers and students enthusiastically asked questions, and Academician Zhao answered the questions asked by student representatives and teacher representatives patiently. For example, personal scientific research planning and cooperation mode between teams under the background of the epidemic, the way to carry out scientific research activities by young teachers and students, and other hot topics were put forward. Academician Zhao answered these questions successively. "The epidemic is uncontrollable, but you can often take books with you and constantly enrich yourself." "We need more communication. Discussion and query promote the development of scientific research. We shouldn't let our thought be quiet." "Young teachers are energetic. They should seize the opportunity to get along with students, and design topics and training programs for students on the basis of students' hobbies." The answers greatly inspired teachers and students.
Academician Zhao Dongyuan keeps concerning the development of SMC. In the first half of this year, he presided over the graduation thesis defense meeting of the first batch of masters of chemical science of SMC as the chairman of the Defense Committee, and placed great hopes on and strongly supported the development of the chemical disciplines and talent cultivation of our school.
The students who attended the lecture indicated: At the beginning of the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China and the semester, I'm very grateful for the "first class" provided by the master and organized by the school. It makes me feel like being filled with wisdom. Academician Zhao told us from the definition of chemistry to the philosophy and course of chemistry, his scientific thoughts and achievements, then to suggestions to young people. All of his words are classical, and I'm deeply enlightened.
