Autumn brings refreshing breezes, and teachers’ kindness endures. To grandly celebrate the 42nd Teachers’ Day and warmly welcome the 120th anniversary of University of Shanghai for Science and Technology, the School of Materials and Chemistry held a Teachers’ Day celebration themed “A Centenary-and-Twenty USST, Shining Together with Materials and Chemistry” in the No.1 Meeting Room of the Library and Information Center on the afternoon of September 10. Zhao Ning, Deputy Secretary of the University Party Committee and Secretary of the University Commission for Discipline Inspection, attended the event and delivered a speech. Former college leaders, veteran faculty members, alumni representatives, the college leadership team and all faculty participated in the activity, which was presided over by Cao Ying, Party Secretary of the School.
On behalf of the university, Zhao Ning extended sincere festive greetings to all faculty working on the front lines of teaching and scientific research, and fully recognized the achievements made by the School of Materials and Chemistry in its development over recent years. He pointed out that all faculty should uphold the fundamental task of fostering virtue through education, keep in mind the mission of cultivating talent for the Party and the nation, and take initiative and responsibility in talent training and scientific innovation. Meanwhile, faculty should strike a balance between career development and physical and mental health, make proper self-adjustment, and devote themselves to teaching, research and daily life with a vigorous mindset. He hoped the school would continue caring for faculty, adopt multiple measures to support their professional growth, and foster a sound environment for faculty to fulfill their duties and pursue their careers.
Cao Ying, Party Secretary of the School, and Wan Ying, Dean of the School, extended warm festive wishes to all faculty and staff. They expressed heartfelt gratitude to former leaders, veteran teachers and alumni for their long-term care and support for the school’s development, introduced progress in key tasks including talent recruitment and cultivation, research fund application and doctoral program construction, and exchanged views with participants on faculty team building and disciplinary connotation improvement.
Dong Xiaoliang, Deputy Party Secretary, systematically summarized the employment work of the school’s graduates and delivered a report covering comprehensive competency development of students, employment assistance and guidance, and services for student growth. Li Wei, Vice Dean, summarized postgraduate training work and shared ideas and measures focusing on improving the quality of postgraduate training and deepening industry-education integration for talent cultivation.
A certificate awarding ceremony was held on site. Honorary certificates were presented to alumni representatives awarded the titles of Meritorious Ambassador, Outstanding Ambassador and Elite Ambassador for Alumni Liaison of the 120th Anniversary Celebration, as well as the school’s excellent class teachers and excellent undergraduate thesis supervisors. Xiao Shuning, representative of excellent class teachers, shared insights from frontline education work based on her job practice. Young faculty representatives Zhu Lijuan and Duan Linlin delivered speeches combining their own teaching and research experience, expressing their firm resolve to stay true to the original aspiration of education and fulfill the mission of university teachers.
Led by Deputy Secretary Dong Xiaoliang, newly recruited faculty collectively read aloud the Ten Guidelines for Professional Conduct of University Teachers in the New Era, further consolidating the ideological foundation for teachers’ ethics and conduct. During the discussion session, retired former leaders, veteran teachers, alumni and faculty representatives gathered to offer suggestions on topics including school development, talent training reform and young faculty growth. Retired teachers such as Feng Huichun, Lei Junxiang and Zhu Li; alumni Cai Min (Class of 1993), Wu Guanfeng (Class of 2002) and Fu Junhao (Class of 2020); together with faculty representatives including Miao Yuqing, Li Xiang, Chen Zezhong and Chen Aiying shared their experiences and offered valuable advice for the advancement of the school and the development of its faculty team.
This Teachers’ Day celebration serves as a vivid practice for the school to carry forward the fine tradition of respecting teachers and valuing education and nurture fertile ground for faculty development. At this important historical juncture of the university’s 120th anniversary, it further built strong consensus for joint progress among faculty and alumni. All faculty members of the school will vigorously promote the spirit of educators, stay committed to the mission of nurturing talent for the Party and the nation, bravely shoulder the responsibilities entrusted by the times, and strive to contribute the wisdom and strength of Materials and Chemistry to the high-quality development of the university and the school.
