To deepen the integration of industry and education and pro‑actively adapt to the new demands arising from the development of the new chemical‑materials industry and the training of engineering talents, on July 30, Professor Wan Ying, Dean of the School of Materials and Chemistry, Dong Xiaoliang, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee, and Li Shengjuan, Vice‑Dean, led a team of key researchers to visit and exchange views with Wanhua Chemical Group. The two sides held a forum covering topics including education and teaching reform, university‑enterprise collaborative talent cultivation, and the transformation of scientific and technological achievements in new‑materials fields.

At the meeting, Song Mingyan, Assistant Director of the Process Development Center of the Research Institute at Wanhua Chemical Group, introduced the enterprise’s industrial layout and talent requirements. She pointed out that the industry is currently in urgent need of interdisciplinary talents equipped with capabilities in both materials research‑and‑development and equipment design, and expressed the enterprise’s intention to establish a long‑term and stable industry‑university‑research cooperation mechanism with the university. Afterwards, Wan Ying gave an overview of the university and the School of Materials and Chemistry, covering its history, disciplinary features, talent‑training programs and scientific‑research progress, with special emphasis on the school’s reform practices in industry‑education integration.

During the discussion, the two sides reached a preliminary consensus on future talent‑training cooperation. The enterprise put forward cooperation demands concerning micro‑specialty construction, interdisciplinary talent cultivation and the establishment of off‑campus internship bases. Both parties agreed to jointly set up a disciplinary steering committee, open internship channels for USST students at Wanhua’s bases in Shandong and Ningbo, and explore a dual‑supervisor training model jointly implemented by the university and the enterprise. In‑depth exchanges were also conducted on artificial‑intelligence‑empowered chemical R&D, intellectual‑property protection and technical‑confidentiality mechanisms in scientific‑research cooperation, as well as targeted hierarchical training for undergraduate and postgraduate students. A regular communication mechanism was agreed upon by both sides.
This visit marks an important practice of the School of Materials and Chemistry to strengthen collaboration with leading industry enterprises and further deepen industry‑education integration. Moving forward, the school will leverage its scientific‑research strengths in new materials and advanced manufacturing, continuously improve cooperation mechanisms for co‑developed courses, practical internship training and joint transformation of scientific and technological achievements, and advance university‑enterprise collaborative talent cultivation. It aims to cultivate more high‑quality application‑oriented engineering talents for the development of the new chemical‑materials industry in the Yangtze River Delta region.
