To further raise awareness of laboratory safety management, consolidate primary safety accountability, standardize operating procedures for hazardous chemicals and experimental equipment, and effectively prevent laboratory safety incidents, the School of Materials and Chemistry held a special training session on laboratory safety management in Meeting Room 201, Ge Building, on the afternoon of May 20. Two invited experts delivered theoretically sound and practically oriented training focusing on key and challenging issues in university laboratory safety administration. Faculty and students of the school attended the training. Cao Jianwei, Deputy Director of the Assets Management Office, and Miao Yuqing, Vice Dean of the School of Materials and Chemistry, were present at the session.
Professor Cong Peihong, Deputy Director of the Department of Polymer Science at Fudan University, who has long been engaged in laboratory safety management, gave a lecture themed Fulfill Safety Responsibilities to Safeguard Scientific Research and Innovation. Drawing on his extensive administrative experience, Professor Cong elaborated in depth on the establishment of a laboratory safety responsibility system, implementation of safety regulations, and coordinated development of research innovation and safety. He introduced advanced practices including the construction of Fudan University’s EHS hazard source management system and hierarchical classified laboratory safety management, and shared practical experience in developing laboratory safety courses and regular safety education training, offering valuable references for the school to refine its laboratory safety management framework.
Subsequently, Professor Miao Yuqing, Vice Dean of the School of Materials and Chemistry, delivered special training on Safety Management of Laboratory Hazardous Chemicals and Heating Equipment. The training standardized the whole-process protocols for the storage, collection, usage and waste disposal of laboratory hazardous chemicals. It also provided detailed guidance on routine operation of heating equipment, hidden danger inspection, and key points of emergency response. With real case analyses, he illustrated common safety violations and their potential hazards, guiding faculty and students to standardize experimental procedures and enhance capabilities for self-inspection, self-correction of risks and emergency evacuation.
Deputy Director Cao Jianwei commented that this targeted, practice-oriented training expanded popularization of laboratory safety knowledge and strengthened the whole school’s adherence to the responsibility principle and bottom-line mindset of Safety First, Prevention Foremost. Moving forward, taking this training as an opportunity, the School of Materials and Chemistry will carry out regular laboratory safety education on an ongoing basis, improve a long-term safety management mechanism, and rigorously implement detailed safety measures. These efforts aim to build a safe, standardized and stable laboratory environment for faculty and students’ research and study, and fully underpin the high-quality development of the school’s teaching and research undertakings.
